ÊPRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

UNSW has partnered with Australia’s leading employers to develop a unique program called GAP – the Graduate Advantage Program, an exciting new vocational program offered by the University of New South Wales.

GAP is designed by industry to assist students in developing the professional skills employers really look for. These organisations are seeking employees who can compliment their technical skills with the right ‘soft’ skills in order to create more efficient and productive work environments.

Students in the program will gain a real and practical understanding of the demands and needs in the workplace to help them make the transition from study to graduate employment more effectively.

This 10 week program will help set you up for your summer vacation/ internship program and give you the Graduate Advantage to start your career.

Who can apply for GAP?

In its debut year, GAP will be a limited offer for UNSW undergraduate students currently majoring in Accounting, Finance or IT related courses (including Bioinformatics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems and Information Technology). Our intention is to expand this offering to other disciplines in subsequent years.

To be eligible for GAP students must:

þ      Be in their penultimate year of study in 2008 (second last year of study, due to finish undergraduate qualification at the end of 2009).

þ      Have a credit average or above

þ      Be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency

There are 50 places open in the first program for 2008.  ACCESS students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Students currently on a cadetship or co-op scholarship are not eligible for this program.

What do students get out of it?

Skills Upgrade

Employers are looking for graduates that have the edge; good technical skills with the business aptitude to match. Our industry partners are interested in your professional development and aim to improve skills in communication, team work, problem-solving, initiative, enterprise, planning, organisation, strategic planning, self-management, ongoing learning and technology. This program will help you get a step ahead of the competition.

Recognition

Upon successful completion students will be awarded a certificate recognising the achievement. This is a great addition to a CV and will be highly regarded by the GAP industry partners. This program will also be recorded on students’ supplementary transcripts as an extra curricula activity. However, this program does not give credit points that count towards a degree.

Networking

Networking can play an important part in your job search. There will be many opportunities throughout the program to meet with industry representatives from all levels, graduates through to CEOs.

Internships

All of GAP’s industry partners are offering internships over the 2008/9 summer break. Students that successfully complete this program are strongly encouraged to apply for these internships and will be favorably considered for a summer vacation/internship program. The program will end with an Internship Fair which will showcase the opportunities to participants.

Exclusive UNSW opportunity

GAP is an industry driven program only offered to UNSW students. Fully resourced by UNSW and our industry partners, GAP is a no cost service of the university. If you are highly motivated to kick start your career and can make a real commitment to this ten week program – GAP is the program for you!
